All lanes of southbound Interstate 5 near DuPont reopened late Wednesday night.
The lanes had closed Monday after a deadly Amtrak train derailment between Tacoma and Olympia.
The speed limit through the two-lane section is 45 miles for hour for safety, according to WSDOT.
Two of the three lanes had opened just before 5 p.m. Wednesday. The right lane remained closed for four more hours while crews repaired a damaged guardrail and continued cleaning debris; the right lane reopened just after 9 p.m. There was no damage to the concrete roadway.
The 270,000 pound locomotive was removed from the scene Wednesday morning and hauled northbound in the southbound I-5 lanes. Traffic had to be halted on DuPont-Steilacoom Road as the flatbed truck carrying the locomotive exited. Because the truck was so large and the turn was so tight, some road signs and lights had to be temporarily removed.
The locomotive was taken to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
After giant cranes used to remove the rail cars were disassembled, and two trees that were considered hazardous were removed, WSDOT crews used heavy equipment to clean the debris off the road so that it could be inspected.
