YAKIMA, Wash. - A wildfire about 30 miles northwest of Yakima has grown to 300 acres in one day.
Nick Mickel of the Washington Incident Management Team says the Forrest Fire -- named after a man with the first name of Forrest -- was reported Saturday morning.
The cause of the fire near the north fork of Ahtanum Creek is under investigation, but Mickel says there was a lot of lighting in the area when the fire started. The area is also known as a popular recreation area.
The fire is burning Sunday on state of Washington land as well as private land. Five campgrounds have been closed, including one close to the fire. The other campgrounds are being evacuated to make room for fire fighters. About 190 people were fighting the fire on Sunday.
The fire was about 50 percent contained as of Sunday evening.
