Since the first explosion on March 2, Texans have been on alert for suspicious packages containing explosive materials. The string of explosions has left two dead and four others injured.
Authorities in Austin, TX, are telling the public that if they see anything suspicious that appears out of place, to not go near it and to call 9-1-1. Austin Police Chief Brian Manley told the public, “Do not handle packages. Do not pick up packages. Do not disturb packages.”
The United States Postal Service echoes the warning to remain cautious, posting on its website potential red flags that suggest a package or parcel of mail could be suspicious.
What does a suspicious package look like?
Look for oil stains, discoloring, crystalized residue, or strong odors coming from the box.
Yes, packages can get beat up in transit, but make sure and take a good look at its condition. Inspect the package to see if it is lopsided, uneven or bulky.
Watch out for excessive postage or tape -- anything that's sticking out, like wires or sharp edges.
It’s also worth reading the fine print. Check for mistakes, misspellings, or funny-looking print or type.
If you notice any red flags, the USPS says to step away from the package and call 911. If you’ve already handled the package, wash your hands with soap and water.
It’s better to be safe than sorry.
