With increased recent reports of a dog dying in an overhead bin, and another that was shipped to Japan instead of Kansas City, it may have you skittish about traveling with your furry friend.

If you are planning to fly with your pet, here are some tips from the ASPCA to ensure a comfortable and safe journey.

1. Get your pet microchipped

2. Get a check-up with the veterinarian

3. If your pet is too large to fit under your seat, buy a USDA approved shipping crate that is appropriately sized. Mark the crate with the words "Live Animal" along with a photo of your pet.

4. Never give sedatives to a pet traveling in cargo.

5. Place a temporary travel tag on your pet's collar that includes your cell phone number and destination numbers for the duration of your trip.

6. Always book a direct flight whenever possible.

7. Tell every airline employee that you see that you are traveling with a pet, whether it's in the cabin or in the cargo hold.
