U.S. intelligence agencies found evidence that Russian-backed covert operatives compromised state websites or voter registration systems in seven states before the 2016 election, but did not tell the states the Russians were involved. That's according to an NBC News report Tuesday, citing multiple U.S. officials.
Washington was not one of the states allegedly compromised. They were believed to be Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Texas, and Wisconsin, according to three intelligence officials who spoke to NBC News.
The report states the penetration ranged from entering state websites to reaching actual voter registration databases.
Some states were warned ahead of the election that foreign entities were probing their systems, NBC News reports none were told the Russian government was behind it.
