The Seattle Seahawks have started working tackle George Fant on the right side in an effort to provide some competition for incumbent starter Germain Ifedi.

“The comp[etition] is on,” coach Pete Carroll stated after practice on Tuesday.

Carroll said the plan has been to have Fant return from his injury and get comfortable at his natural spot at left tackle, before sliding him over to the right side to compete with Ifedi and Isaiah Battle for the starting job.

Ifedi has drawn the ire of many Seahawks fans after a disappointing 2017 season and subpar performances in the first two preseason games. Carroll was quick to praise some aspects of Ifedi’s performance on Saturday.

“He’s cleaned up some things in his game that I’m happy about,” Carroll said. “He’s making progress and he’s competing like crazy, but he’s getting challenged too. He knows we think a lot of George Fant. He knows we have a high opinion of what he’s capable of doing.”

Fant was expected to be Seattle’s starter at left tackle in 2017, but a preseason ACL injury caused him to miss the entire year and forced the Seahawks to make a midseason trade for Duane Brown.

With Brown signing an extension, it was clear that Fant’s path to playing time would be at another position. Carroll has been happy with Fant’s ability to adapt, saying, “there’s nothing that we’ve put in front of him that he couldn’t handle.”

“It’s just another example of the competition that’s on the roster,” Carroll continued. “It’s good for everybody. It’s great for the guys in front, it’s great for the guys that are working for their spots, and that’s always been our mentality.”
