Seattle Seahawks rookie linebacker Shaquem Griffin will get his first regular-season start Sunday against the Denver Broncos.

On Wednesday, coach Pete Carroll confirmed K.J. Wright has been ruled out for Week 1 and Griffin will get the nod to start in his place.

“Yes, in that regard, yeah,” Carroll replied with a smile when asked about Griffin’s starting status for Sunday. “That’s the only one I’ll give you.”

Wright underwent a knee scope at the end of August and was estimated to be out for a least two weeks. The rookie has been preparing to hear his number called, even though Wright’s recovery has been quicker than expected.

“K.J. looks really good, he’d probably surprise you,” Carroll told reporters Wednesday during his press conference. “He hasn’t been out of surgery two weeks yet – maybe it’s two right now – but he looks fantastic.”

Wright could return in time for Monday Night Football against the Bears for the Seahawks Week 2 matchup.

“We’ll see what happens next Wednesday, Thursday, see where he is,” Carroll continued. “Holding high hopes, but we’ll see, I don’t know what that means.”

Griffin and his teammates kick off against the Broncos in Denver Sunday at 1:25 p.m. to kick off their regular season.
