The Seattle Seahawks may not get a return from running back Chris Carson after all this season.

The seventh-round pick suffered a high ankle sprain against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4 and was placed on Injured Reserve after undergoing left ankle surgery.

According to Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, Carson, who has been eyeing a comeback this season, encountered a new hurdle in his rehabilitation process.

“Chris had a little bit of setback in his rehab,” Carroll said on Friday. “Did a little bit of an ankle turn, just caught it a little bit. So, we just got to make sure we know what that means as he bounces back from it.”

In recent weeks, Carroll said Carson was “unbelievably ahead of schedule,” giving some optimism the Seattle running back could at the very least be activated from injured reserve before the season’s conclusion.

Carson took hold of his opportunity as Seattle’s lead back prior to the Week 4 injury, rushing for 49 carries for 208 yards and seven receptions for 59 yards with one receiving touchdown.

The news is unsettling for many Seahawks fans that hoped Carson would return to the field this year. The good news is he’ll have a chance to compete again in 2018 if he’s unable to make it back this season.
