February 20 is quickly looming, the date clubs can begin to tag a player they want to keep from hitting the free agent market.

NFL.com took a look at eight candidates most likely to be tagged this season and Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson made the list.

“Like the Rams with Sammy Watkins, the Seahawks could use the franchise tag to help justify a previous trade,” writes Gregg Rosenthal, Around The NFL Editor. “Seattle gave up a second-round pick and receiver Jermaine Kearse to get 654 solid, if unspectacular, snaps out of Richardson. It’s been three full seasons since Richardson has played his best, but coach Pete Carroll is already on the record about trying to keep him.

“The tag is the easiest way to accomplish that.”

Richardson, 27, was originally selected by the Jets in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft with the No. 13 overall pick. He had an impressive first season, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year, and was named to the Pro Bowl following his 2014 campaign. After various struggles the next two seasons, Richardson was traded to the Seahawks on Sept. 1, 2017.

For Seattle, Richardson logged 44 combined tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and an interception.
