Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett was focused on a lot more than just football this season. Bennett has written a book, “Things That Make White People Uncomfortable,” which will be released on April 3 per his coauthor, Dave Zirin.
“This is my story, this is my journey, my thoughts on sports, my thoughts on issues in America, my thoughts on women’s equality – different issues like that,” Bennett told reporters in June. “I think when people think about writers as an athlete, they think about you writing a story about your sports journey, but mine is more of a reflection of America and its past and its time.”
Bennett has been outspoken about being a passionate reader and even started a Seahawks book club for players during the 2016 season.
The intro to Bennett’s book on Amazon begins:
Michael Bennett is a Super Bowl Champion, a two time Pro Bowl defensive end, a fearless activist, a feminist, a grassroots philanthropist, an organizer, and a change maker. He’s also one of the most scathingly humorous athletes on the planet, and he wants to make you uncomfortable.
Editorial reviews for the book on the site include props from former NBA player and writer Etan Thomas and Senator Bernie Sanders. The book’s forward is penned by Bennett’s brother, Martellus.
