Your old refrigerator can become a new bicycle and Puget Sound Energy wants to recycle it free of charge. PSE says the metal in your old fridge is often used in new bikes.
It's easy to recycle.
PSE will pick it up and even give you a $50 dollar rebate that can be used to purchase a new energy efficient fridge, washer or dryer. You have to be a PSE customer, though. The offer ends June 1.
Since 2007, PSE's recycling program has collected almost 60,000 units. That means recycling approximately 9 million pounds of material.
Because refrigerators are the number two energy user in a home, PSE also reports reducing 434,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, which equals nearly 47,000 homes' energy use for one year.
An outdated fridge or freezer can cost four times as much to operate than a new energy-efficient model. Just by updating an old refrigerator or freezer, you can save up to $200 a year, PSE reports.
It's easy to recycle – the pick-up appointment only takes about 15 minutes. Call 1-877-577-0510 to schedule an appointment.
