Alaska Airlines announces smaller carry-on size

Alaska says smaller carry-on sizes might lower confusion when passengers make connections between airlines.

In time for summer travel, the carry-on bag size limit at Alaska Airlines, Horizon, and SkyWest will be smaller.

The airline is adjusting the size limit to 22” x 14” x 9” starting June 4. The current limit is 24” x 17” x 10” which Alaska claims is larger than most other airlines.

The smaller size, they say, allows for baggage uniformity when passengers must make connections with other airlines who have different requirements. The new shift in size limit is meant to match other airlines and avoid passenger confusion. This also allows the airline to fit more bags into the overhead bins.

The new size restrictions include wheels and handles in the measurement so make sure to check your bag before you leave. You can measure it at home using Alaska's guidelines, or place the bag in one of the bag sizers at the airport.

Passengers will still be allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item like a purse, briefcase, or laptop.
