'Home for the Holidays' event celebrates dozens of formerly unhoused women across Western Washington

"Keeping the key" to permanent housing is one of the main goals of Dignity for Divas. On Dec. 21, the nonprofit will host a special holiday event.

SEATTLE — Making family holiday memories in a place you call home has become a goal for many women working through a western Washington program.

Dignity for Divas, a Seattle-based nonprofit, is hosting its 4th Annual Christmas Home for the Holidays event on Dec. 21.

More than 60 new families are celebrating the holidays in their own homes after experiencing homelessness.

Nikki Gane-Butler, founder of Dignity for Divas (DFD), started the organization 12 years ago. In the past, she also experienced homelessness.

Currently, Dignity for Divas, serves women and families in Seattle, Bellevue, Everett, Tacoma, Kent, and Renton, but the team said they are always stretching their arms as wide as they can.

Over the years, Gane-Butler said the nonprofit has not only helped women, but also men and children, with a number of services including outreach services, housing assistance, and professional and self-care classes and workshops.

Many programs and community building are held at the Diva Dream Academy on Dexter Avenue in Seattle.

There are new programs, including Zumba classes and music classes that are all volunteer led

DFD is hoping to increase its volunteer base by 30 percent in 2025.

Some volunteer opportunities include staffing the new food pantry where divas can shop privately.

More than 72 percent of divas in the program remain housed, which Gane-Butler said is well above the average of most programs.

"Addressing homelessness isn’t cookie cutter," according to Gane-Butler, who said she and her team meet women where they are and provide them with a safe space to do the internal work necessary for success.

Christmas Home for the Holidays

DFD's Christmas Home for the Holidays will have special gifts provided by Microsoft’s Giving Tree, as well as special “goody bags,” containing décor and other items that will help the families make their first holiday special.

DFD still needs volunteers for the event to run the hot cocoa station and help hand out gifts and goody bags.
