SEATTLE -- U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Wednesday announced a renewed effort to solve the 2001 slaying of Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Wales.
Wales, a longtime federal prosecutor, was killed in his Queen Anne home on Oct. 11, 2001. He was working in the basement office when someone shot him through a window. No one has ever been charged in the case.
Holder, joined by U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan and Wales's two children, urged anyone with information in the case to come forward.
Tom was a dedicated public servant, a committed advocate, and a loving father and friend, Holder said. Although this case remains unsolved, and Tom s killer remains unknown, our resolve to uncover the truth and to help Tom s family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors find the answers and the closure that they deserve has never been stronger.
The public awareness campaign will include ads in The Seattle Times and The Stranger, billboards and commercials on local radio and television starting today and run through the anniversary of Wales death on October 11. The FBI has also launched a new web page, www.fbi.gov/wales.
Authorities initially concentrated their efforts on a businessman whom Wales had unsuccessfully prosecuted in a fraud case. Their investigation failed to turn up enough evidence and the man was never charged.
The Justice Department is offering a $1 million reward for information that convicts the shooter. Tips can be submitted by phone, mail or email.
