After numerous requests, the Port of Seattle has setup a donation bin for federal workers who are not being paid during the partial government shutdown.
Port of Seattle spokesperson Perry Cooper tells KING 5 a "number of groups and individuals" asked how they could help as the government shutdown extended into its 27th day on Thursday.
Those interested can bring non-perishable food and gift cards to the donation area outside the Sea-Tac Conference Center at the south end of the airport's mezzanine level between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Cash and checks will not be accepted.
Cooper says the port is working with agencies at the airport on the best way to distribute donations.
Roughly 2,000 federal workers at Sea-Tac Airport alone are either furloughed or working without pay during the shutdown. Some are turning to food stamps.
On Wednesday, air traffic controllers expressed safety concerns.
The government shutdown was already the longest ever before it entered its 27th day on Thursday. Though President Trump's advisers said the shutdown is proving to be a greater drag on the economy than expected. President Trump signed legislation Wednesday that affirmed that about 800,000 federal workers currently not being paid will be compensated.
