ANACORTES, Wash. — There are so many ways to celebrate the season around Anacortes. Among them - shopping! If you're looking for something unique to give this year, these are just a few of the stores you’ll find.
The Wishing Rock
You don't have to have a green thumb to like the first stop on our shop-spree through Anacortes.
"The name is The Wishing Rock, and it is a gift shop with a garden theme. People that love gardens and the outdoors, this is a wonderful shop for them," said Lori Maul, owner of The Wishing Rock.
Maul keeps the store stocked with an array of eclectic items from seasonal to year-round. But it’s her plants that are her number one seller.
"People are very into plants right now," she said. "We have a wonderful selection. We keep very good care of our plants. They're really, really healthy. People think that they're not real, which is kind of funny."
Besides plants, the shop also features creations made by local artisans.
"I am very careful with what I choose," said Maul. "I try to bring in value for my customers as well as for us."
With its inviting vibes, you may wish to linger in the store a little longer.
"That's one of the things we get all the time is that it's a very peaceful atmosphere," Maul said.
Scott Milo Gallery
Looking for some art? You'll find amazing pieces at Scott Milo Gallery.
"I think people are surprised at the quality of art that we have here. A lot of our artists show in big galleries and big towns and get into a lot of regional and national shows," said Kathy Khile, owner of Scott Milo Gallery.
Khile has owned the gallery since it opened 30 years ago. She carries a wide variety of art from mediums like glass, sculpture, oil paintings and more.
"We feature 60 [artists] regularly throughout the year, plus the group shows, which bring about 40 artists each," said Khile. "I pretty much stick with people that are in about a 60-mile radius from Anacortes. We have great relationships with the different artists that we work with. Some of them we've worked with for 20 to 25 years."
But be warned: if you see something you like, you might consider getting it. It may not be there when you return.
"Kind of like going to Costco, you got to buy it when you see it, because it'll be gone soon," Khile said.
Clayhouse
If you're searching for a one-of-a-kind gift that's also an experience, you'll find both at, Clayhouse.
"I opened this place because I wanted to share my love of clay with people and do it in a friendly, warm, inviting atmosphere," said Jennifer Chambliss, owner of Clayhouse.
Chambliss opened her charming studio space almost two years ago - giving everyone from beginners to advanced ceramicists a place to get their hands dirty and create.
"You come in, you pick out a project. We've got at least 20 different walk-in projects," said Chambliss. "We bring you the clay, you pick out a bunch of different stamps and rollers. We have all sorts of things to add texture to your clay, and then we show you, step by step, how to build it. Then, we fire it for you and you'd pick it up in two weeks."
Clayhouse also hosts various events including private parties and ladies' nights. But it's the satisfaction of making something with your own hands that makes the greatest gift.
"Clay is not as intimidating as a blank canvas would be," Chambliss said. "We walk people through the experience of making something, and 99% of the time they're just full of joy when they leave."
