Seattle Public Utilities prepares for potential urban flooding

SPU is increasing staffing and is ready to respond to flooding during this week's atmospheric river. It says there are things homeowners can do to prepare, too.

SEATTLE — Seattle Public Utilities is preparing for potential urban flooding in light of this week's forecasted atmospheric river

"We've restocked our sandbags in all of our key areas at all of our neighborhood community points," said Ray Brown, Division Director for SPU Drainage and Wastewater Systems. "We've increased our staffing to cover our off-shift hours [as] our communities, they're going to want to see our folks out there being responsive, out there clearing drains."

Brown warns drivers not to go through ponded areas if possible. In general, drive slower during the morning and evening commutes, and be cautious if passing crews out clearing areas.

"When in doubt, slow down," Brown said. "It's not gonna help us to save five seconds and possibly injure yourself or someone else."

Brown says people can prepare by making sure their gutters and downspouts are cleaned out and as rain comes in, it drains away from a home's foundation. They can also look at storm drains near their home and clear any debris if necessary, being sure to use gloves and safety glasses if they do. While SPU monitors drains and the Seattle Department of Transportation sweeps streets, new leaves and pine needles can still find their way into drains.

If facing an emergency, call 911. If reporting non-emergent flooding, call (206) 386-1800.

SPU is also offering free sandbags for people in flood-prone areas. To learn more, click here
