The King County Council voted Monday to reduce all Metro Transit fares to a flat rate of $2.75.
The change eliminates extra charges associated with traveling between zones and in off-peak hours.
The change will impact less than one-third of Metro riders, while remaining riders will see their prices stay the same or decrease by 50 cents. Previously, fares on Metro Transit could cost adults between $2.75 to $3.25.
The council claims that the new rate will increase revenue over two years by $3.5 million.
"We’ve heard from the community, and we are responding by making riding Metro Transit in King County easier and more convenient,” said Council Vice Chair Rod Dembowski, chair of the Council’s Transportation Economy and Environment Committee, and prime sponsor of the legislation.
The new fare rate will take effect on July 1, 2018.
