Prince's Paisley Park back on track to open Thursday

Prince's Paisley Park will welcome visitors as scheduled Thursday, although the museum's doors may not stay open for long.

Prince's Paisley Park will welcome visitors as scheduled Thursday, although the museum's doors may not stay open for long.

The late musician's suburban Minneapolis estate was set to begin daily tours this week, a plan that hit a roadblock when the city council of Chanhassen, Minn., tabled a rezoning request for the museum Monday night.

Until it reaches a decision, the council has granted temporary permits for public tours on Thursday, Saturday and Oct. 14, according to David Beckwith, a spokesman for Paisley Park. No new tickets are available those three days for the sold-out tours, which will take guests through Prince's legendary home and studio complex.

But Prince fans who purchased museum tickets for other dates aren't so lucky. Ticket holders for Oct. 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 15 will be given refunds for their original dates, although Paisley Park will attempt to accommodate as many of them as possible on the three tour dates that will take place. Those with tickets for Oct. 16 and beyond will be notified about new dates.

The estate is in discussions with Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., to host an exhibition of Prince artifacts and wardrobe, which it anticipates opening early next week. Paisley Park ticket holders will be able to use their museum tickets at the exhibition.

Several council members voiced concerns about traffic and parking, saying they needed more time to study the impact of opening Paisley Park as a museum, which would host an anticipated 600,000 visitors a year. Chanhassen is located outside Minneapolis and St. Paul, and has a population of 25,000, according to a 2015 report released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The council will vote again on the rezoning request by Dec. 20, according to a statement from the city.

Prince died of an accidental overdose of the painkiller fentanyl at Paisley Park on April 21. He was 57.
