One of Seattle's premiere theaters switched up their movie schedule this week, opting not to screen Oscar-winner "Green Book" as previously announced.
In honor of this year's Academy Awards, the Cinerama theater planned to show the film chosen as the Best Picture for five days, between March 2-6. In addition to replaying the winner, Cinerama would show each nominee for one day during the week before March 2.
"Green Book" will still play at Cinerama on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
"Due to popular demand, we’re making a programming change and will be bringing back a few of the Cinerama crowd favorites..." the theater tweeted Monday.
Instead of playing "Green Book" as originally planned, Cinerama will screen "Black Panther" March 1-2, "BlacKkKlansman" March 3-4, and "Roma" March 5-6.
The best picture winner stars Mahershala Ali as a concert pianist in the 1960s and Viggo Mortensen as his driver. The pair travel through the south in the 1960s for a story that many have called reminiscent of "Driving Miss Daisy."
Ali won a gold statue for his portrayal of Dr. Don Shirley and the film won its third prize for best original screenplay.
The film's depiction of racial tolerance faced criticism before and after Sunday's awards. Some have called the film's story "outdated" and argued that other films more directly tackled topics of racism without sugarcoating elements of its story.
Renowned director Spike Lee caught attention immediately following the ceremony for sharing his disappointment in the outcome. Lee said the Academy "made the wrong call."
Cinerama switched up its "And The Winner Is..." series after getting feedback from "fans about what movies they are most excited about."
A spokesperson for the theater on Tuesday said, "Black Panther, BlacKKKlansman and Roma overwhelmingly rose to the top, so we decided to play those instead of Green Book."
"We love our Cinerama fans and happy to show the movies they are most excited about from the last year as part of this series," the spokesperson said.
