Star Trek's Walter Koenig talks about show's staying power

Trekkies are taking over Bellevue this weekend as the Meydenbaur Center hosts the Official Star Trek Convention.

KING 5 spoke exclusively to Walter Koenig, a legendary member of the original cast who played "Chekov."

He said 50 years ago, he had no idea the fan following the show would attract.

"It was an amazing phenomenon that continues to endure," he said. "If one was to use as a barometer the attendance at conventions - it's growing. It's absolutely growing after all these years."

Koenig said fans tell him Star Trek was the only show they watched with their parents.

"That's a keen thing, that's a really neat thing, that Star Trek has brought people, brought families, closer together," he said.

Fans lined up to get autographs from Koenig and several other well known cast members.

The convention runs through Sunday. tickets can be purchased at the door.
