SEATTLE — Cake is synonymous with birthdays and weddings, but a new shop in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood wants people to reframe their perceptions.
Paper Cake Shop specializes in single slices of gourmet cake, designed to be eaten on even the most mundane days.
"That's the reason why every single cake is decorated per slice. They're just made for you," said renowned restauranteur and owner Rachel Yang.
The cakes are created by celebrated pastry chef Gabby Park, who first worked with Yang in 2014.
"Just being able to try so many flavors and collaborate with Rachel and bounce ideas off each other has been great,” she said. "I just love the creative aspect and particularly the decorating is my pride and joy."
In the spirit of British tradition, Paper Cake encourages a daily social ritual where people enjoy a slice with tea. But their flavors veer away from traditional.
"We both have an Asian/Korean background, so we really wanted to bring cool different flavors that are indigenous to Asia and Korea,” Yang said.
Park added, "These are elevated sheet cakes with an Asian twist to them. The Ube Mocha is inspired by a beverage… there’s POG, which I feel like is such a classic beloved flavor of people in the Asian diaspora."
The creativity continues with "Snack Aisle" cake, which blends chocolate, peanut butter, caramel and pretzels into one bite. The “Keel Bill” is a lemon cake with blackberry jam and raspberry buttercream, topped with fruit loops.
Since each slice is layered sheet cake, Park said customers get the intended mix of flavors in one forkful.
"Take the big bite," she said.
The shop also features colorful milk teas, blended in-house.
Whole cakes can be pre-ordered online.
Paper Cake Shop is open Wednesday through Sunday from 2 – 9 p.m. It’s located at 4106 Stone Way North.
