SEATTLE — A unique midcentury home in Seattle nicknamed “The Wedge House” is for sale.
"Just a stone's throw from I-5, just below St. Mark's, the setting of the house blends in but stands out from the surrounding greenbelt,” said Kji Kelly, Executive Director of Historic Seattle.
This memorable property is officially named the Egan House after its original owners, but neighbors coined it the Wedge House because of its distinctive form and shape.
In the 1950's, architect Robert Reichert distinguished himself with his unique and sometimes controversial designs. But the Egan House is a book that shouldn't be judged by its cover.
"It reads from the exterior in almost a chaotic way,” Kelly said. "When you come inside, you feel the sense of belonging and home."
Kelly isn't a traditional realtor. He's executive director of the organization that saved Egan House. Non-profit Historic Seattle preserves and stewards meaningful places.
"When we first acquired the house in 1998, we did a lot of structural upgrades,” he said. "We rebuilt the deck several years ago."
Most of the 1,190-square foot home remains true to its original era. There are two bedrooms and 1 ¾ baths. The higher the floor, the more the home seems to grow in volume. The main living space is on the top level, inside the “wedge” part of the home.
"Everything is very original to the house, both from the exterior ornamentation, the window arrangement, to the interior built-in features,” Kelly said. "The GE ‘Wonder Kitchen’ that came with the house, that's still in the house. Very unique and very of 1958."
The house isn't just a home - it's a designated City of Seattle landmark and Kelly said not a typical "unreal estate" property.
"Because it was very real. It was very authentic. It was very genuine in design,” Kelly said. "The Egan House in a lot of ways is a very real piece of real estate that resonates with a lot of people."
He hopes whoever buys the house will tie the past to the present for the future.
"The next owner of the Egan House will be someone that cares about something larger than themselves,” Kelly said.
The Egan House is located at 1500 Lakeview Blvd. East and is listed for $845,000.
