SEATTLE — Want to visit the desert without ever leaving Seattle? “Check-in” to a new motel-themed pop-up bar on Capitol Hill!
The Mystic Motel is designed to make guests feel like they’ve stepped inside a Wes Anderson movie set in a desert getaway, 50 years ago.
"It's very dark in here, which is great because you walk in and you're transported to a completely different space,” said special events manager Christy Elliott Special Events Manager. "A dusty roadside motel that you just stumble upon that happens to have a really cool bar in it."
Next to the bar is a desk with an old rotary phone and a guest book.
“We get lots of very interesting notes written in there,” Elliott laughed. "It's really interesting people pick up that phone and not know what to do with it."
The second level of the space is filled with lanterns and lit with galaxy lighting, giving it an outdoor feel.
Photo spots are found throughout the pop-up, from an old luggage cart stacked with vintage suitcases to a neon Mystic Motel sign set above faux cacti.
There are also plenty of critters to pose with, including a coyote and armadillo.
"We have wildlife. I mean, the Hill is full of wildlife so why not bring more in here?” Elliott said.
In deference to cowboy culture, there's also a horse – specifically, a pommel horse, set against a backdrop of cowboy hats.
The menu also reflects the theme.
"For drinks, we have a bunch of desert-themed drinks, we have really cool glassware,” Elliott said. "And for food we have lots of fun little snacks like sloppy joe sliders, we have queso and chips, cowboy caviar is a big seller."
There's even Frito Pie, served in the bag.
The Mystic Motel is open Wednesday – Sunday from 5 p.m. until late. It’s located at 1512 11th Avenue and is expected to be open through at least the summer.
