SEATTLE — On this Earth Day, you can help restore native oysters to Puget Sound waters by drinking a locally-made Oyster Stout.
Ghostfish Brewing in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood created the limited-edition brew as part of the Earth to Beer campaign. Roughly 35 breweries across the nation are raising money to support local environmental non-profits.
"Puget Sound Restoration Fund is really doing some amazing work,” said Brian Thiel, co-founder of Ghostfish Brewing. "We need good, clean water to do what we do and pairing up with an organization that's really focused on a large body of water that is important to this region - there may not be a direct connection between us and them, but it doesn't take too long to figure out that what they're doing does in some way have an impact on all of us."
The brewery made 15 barrels of Oyster Stout and tapped it on April 22.
"It's a style that's not brewed a lot... but it's something our head brewer felt like was a challenge he wanted to take on,” Thiel said. "We did actually brew this beer with about 100 pounds of freshly-shucked oyster shells and all the juices and brine that comes along with that."
Two dollars from each four-pack of Oyster Stout sold goes to the Puget Sound Restoration Fund.
For more than a quarter century, the small but mighty non-profit has helped restore native species like bull kelp, pinto abalone and Olympia Oysters.
"I really feel what people need to do is look for the bright spots because there are those pockets of success everywhere, when you look for them. And that can really help buoy people's moods and inspire action,” said Jodie Toft, Deputy Director of Puget Sound Restoration Fund. "Embracing these resources, gathering together behind them, restoring them, and celebrating all that they bring to us."
Ghostfish Brewing is also serving a limited-edition Oyster Po’ Boy to pair with the beer. Like everything else on their menu, it’s 100% gluten-free.
The taproom is open daily and all ages are welcome. It’s located at 2942 1st Ave. South.
