SEATTLE — A large, and famous ship just showed up on the Seattle Waterfront."Titanic. The Exhibition" invites all aboard, to learn the personal stories behind the well known cruise liner's tragic history.
"The exhibition is a narrative journey. It takes about 90 minutes and it's an audio guided tour to the human side of the Titanic experience," said Emma Shaffer, a project manager at Fever, one of the companies partnering to bring this exhibition to cities all over the world. "So, what we're really looking at is the stories of the survivors and the victims, and the families and pieces they've left behind."
There are over 200 artifacts within the exhibition, many of them from aboard the Titanic. Each piece has a story that goes along with it.
"A lot of them have been donated from families of survivors and victims and pieces that were found, even pieces that were used to identify bodies," Shaffer said.
A water-stained first class passenger list found in the pocket of an unknown person. A wedding ring. A bible and a pocket watch. All items that belonged to people who were aboard the Titanic.
There are also spaces that truly take you aboard the ship.
"We didn't want it to be a standard exhibition, so there are recreations within the exhibition, of different class cabins and also hallways that you can walk through," Shaffer said.
"Titanic - The Exhibition" saves it's most powerful piece for journey's end.
"The last room you walk into is a list of all of the people that had passed away in this tragic accident," Shaffer said. "There's a bit of reverence there. Of course, you want to respect the families and the lives that were lost on that tragic day."
The names of the 1,496 crew members and passengers that died cover the walls of that room, and in the center is a lifejacket that was recovered from one of them.
"I hope people really take away the human side of Titanic," Shaffer said.
"Titanic. The Exhibition" starts July 25th 2024 and is located at 906 Alaskan Way, Seattle, WA 98104, Tickets are $29 for people over 13, and $19 for children 4 - 12.
