SEATTLE — The smallest ideas can become towering achievements both in real life and in LEGO bricks, as evidenced by the new exhibition at Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry.
“Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO Bricks" showcases some of the world’s most iconic towers and skyscrapers, recreated out of LEGO bricks.
"It’s an interesting combination of creativity and math and design principles,” said Devorah Romanek, Chief of Exhibits and Interpretation.
The global buildings were created by Australian LEGO designer Ryan McNaught, who’s one of only 21 LEGO Certified Professionals in the world.
Models include Dubai's Burj Khalifa, New York's Empire State Building and Chrysler Building, and Toronto's CN Tower.
"Part of what's so fascinating about this exhibition is play with scale, because you get the big and the small in these different ways,” Romanek said. “There's also just the details to hone in on, just tiny infinitesimal windows and doors."
Eagle-eyed visitors will see inside the lobby of the 111 West 57th Street building.
Each creation is also designed to inspire new ones, in the hands of visitors. Several stations around the exhibition come equipped with LEGO bricks and tabletop space for guests to make their own designs, which are also put on display.
“It’s impressive,” Romanek said. "I was here this weekend and there was a group of teenage boys building something together and having the best time and frankly, it wasn't what I was expecting but it was wonderful to see."
LEGO bricks connect in more ways than one. They’re a thread through generations, and the exhibition is intended for audiences of all ages.
"I think that makes it extra special, and I think Seattle is a place where there are a lot of adults who are interested in LEGO,” Romanek said. "It's amazing, it's exciting, it's moving."
“Towers of Tomorrow with LEGO Bricks” runs through September 22, 2024.
