PUYALLUP, Wash. — The Powerhouse in Puyallup is easy to miss. The brick building that houses the restaurant and brewery doesn't look like much from the outside, but looks can be deceiving. This place is a true hidden gem with one shocking past.

The building was constructed in 1907 as a substation providing power for the Interurban Electric Trolley that ran from Seattle to Olympia until the 1950s. After sitting abandoned for decades, it was converted into a brewpub serving delicious food and craft beer.

The décor reflects the history. The space is filled with remnants and antiques from the building's substation days. The Powerhouse is now owned by brothers Dan and Jonathan Tweten who wanted to create a welcoming space for the entire community.

"Dan and I have family in Puyallup so we have been coming here for years," said Jonathan. "We both love home brewing and this is kind of a chance to do it on a bigger scale."

All of the beer is brewed in-house. A large window in the dinning space gives customers a peek inside the operation. The tap list rotates on a regular basis so there's always something new to try. The No Fruit Was Harmed Hazy IPA and Roasted Porter are popular choices. But if you can't decide, make sure to ask for a sample.

The food menu feature a mix of traditional and modern pub fare – everything from burgers to pizza and giant pretzels. The Famous Fire Pasta is a Powerhouse favorite. The dish will definitely light up your taste buds. The linguini pasta is topped a spicy sauce and chili flakes.
