Lucky 7! For the seventh straight year a Tacoma charity gives a car to a community volunteer

"I feel like we're making our community a better place one car at a time," says Wheels to Prosper organizer Kevin House. #k5evening

TACOMA, Wash — There is standing room only at the Tacoma auto body shop, Center Collision where owner Kevin House is about to make a big announcement.

"We're gonna be giving away a car to a deserving person in our community today," he said.

This is House's favorite day of the year. Christmas and the 4th of July all wrapped in one.

"It changes a person's life, " House said. "Wheels to Prosper is not just a car giveaway. It’s a community event focused on recognizing an outstanding individual who is making a direct impact in our community regardless of the barriers inflicted on them without a vehicle."

That describes Liz Benavidez, who makes sandwiches for the homeless and volunteers all the time, when she's not having chemo treatment to battle a rare form of cancer

"There is not just one thing that is special about her," said her friend Silvia Goddard who nominated Benavidez. "She goes above and beyond. Her heart is amazing."

Benavidez believes she's one of three finalists who might get to drive away in a refurbished 2016 Nissan Versa, donated from In-N-Out Auto Sales. Other South Sound auto companies also contributed to making sure the car was in excellent working order.

Benavidez is waiting to hear about the other two finalists when House announces into his microphone "I gotta tell you about this big fat lie I just told you, and that is we didn't invite more people. Liz come up here!"

The entire room erupts into applause. Benavidez takes off her glasses to wipe away tears and walks up to House who gives her a big hug.

"My mind is just in overdrive," Benavidez would say moments later. "To get a car in a car giveaway is absolutely incredible. It's my freedom. It's my ability to take care of myself and to keep doing good."

House loses his voice for a moment and then said, "I just look forward to a brighter future for you."

"Thank you," Benavidez said.

"I got a little choked up at the end. I guess I'm an emotional person," House said later.

There are many hugs, tears and photos, not to mention some documents that need signing. The car, and $1,750 worth of gas cards now belong to Benavidez.

How does this moment feel?

"Absolutely incredible!" Benavidez said. "I have a car! This is crazy! I don't have to bum rides from everybody and try to navigate public transportation with a chemo brain and no sense of direction. I don't recommend it so this is going to be absolutely incredible."

Benavidez drove out of the collision center with her best friends cheering her on.

"I feel like we're making our community a better place one car at a time," House said.
