Celebrating diversity through drinks

Revelry Room is a cozy and intimate back bar in West Seattle. #k5evening

SEATTLE — A Black-owned and operated back bar located in the heart of the Alaska Junction in West Seattle that looks like the perfect 70s groovy lounge. When you see the giant R mural, you know you are in the right place.

“I wouldn't call it the speakeasy because it's not completely hidden, but you're going to have to know where to look to find it,” said Revelry Room owner Derek Moon.

Once inside, you will notice the welcoming, elegant, but not pretentious space with hip orange stools in the main bar, a Space Needle mural, and even a DJ booth. It is no surprise that West Seattle residents are taking notice of this unique place.

You also have to check out the very Instagram-worthy bathroom dedicated to the late singer and music legend Prince.

“The toned colors and the seventies retro vibe make sense,” said Revelry Room owner Tony Larson. “We are a small lounge in West Seattle that has great cocktails but is also very music-centric.”

When it comes to music, this bar invites local and national DJs to jam every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. They even feature an all-vinyl night.

But it isn't all about the décor and the music. They offer a unique, carefully curated menu when it comes to cocktails.

Try their “Purple Drank,” a mixed drink with blended rum, cachaca, orgeat, lime, orange, ube and cinnamon. Another favorite is their “Revelry Old Fashioned” with cognac, Jamaican rum, banana, Haiti coffee co. bitters by Lady Jaye.

They pride themselves on spotlighting black-owned distilleries, wineries and breweries to showcase the diversity and excellence of these often overlooked brands.

“The way our menu reads is something you know, something you know, oh, that's interesting,” said Larson. “It's important to us not only to represent the revelry room as a Black-owned business but to uplift other brands.”

If you're looking for a good time in West Seattle, remember to make a stop in the Big R.
