Outhouses race through the streets in Conconully

CONCONULLY, Wash. — In the winter, residents even refer to the town as "Winter Wonderland," because the trees drip with snow. But show up for the annual Outhouse Races, and it's an entirely different world.

"Today we are having our 35th annual Outhouse Races in the downtown street of Conconully," said event organizer Janet Warner.

Participating racers build an outhouse, place it on skis, and give the ride a funny name. The only requirements: there must be a toilet seat, a roll of toilet paper, and the person on the toilet seat needs to have a helmet.

Some teams are new, and others are generational. Team Ye Old Butt Hut started in 1983 and have been participating ever since the races started.

And things get really wild when the bucket races start. The runners of each outhouse place buckets over their faces and attempt the race.

"The atmosphere is great, the whole community comes out," said one competitor. "It's just a nice day to be outside and act like idiots pushing around outhouses."

The day is full of nothing but smiles. Racers spend the rest of the day partying until the days close and then the town of Conconully will return to its normal, quiet self.
