SHELTON, Wash. — Shelton, Wash. is historically known as Christmas Town, USA because it celebrates the magic of Christmas in a big way -- with a maze full of trees and lights on Cota Street. The magical event is completely driven by the Christmas spirit of Mason County to celebrate the joy of the holidays with friends and family.
And how seriously does this community take their Christmas Tree Maze? Back in 2019, they went after the Guinness World Record for the most Christmas trees in one location -- and they won. Even though they still hold the record, every year, the volunteers and the community work together to make it bigger and better than ever.
“We have about 900 trees in this maze, and it takes about two days to put it up,” said Rachel Hansen. “It's all made possible by volunteers and community sponsors.”
Those who can navigate well can finish the maze in about three minutes, but you can easily get lost and find yourself at a dead-end with Santa, a spot where you can take selfies, or a tunnel for kids to play. And you will never run out of the trees and lights to see.
A lot of children from this neighborhood help build this maze, so there's no wonder that a bunch of kids can basically guide you through this maze.
The maze admission and parking are free of cost; it is open daily through January 2 until 10 p.m. They also have a full schedule of public events planned for this season, where you can enjoy music, food, crafting, fire pits, games, and even witness Santa turning on the light of the maze.
This is a tradition that carries on, one that has become part of Shelton's Christmas identity.
