SEATTLE — The Broadway classic musical that made a star out of Barbra Streisand almost 60 years ago is coming to Seattle.
"Funny Girl" starts a six-day run at the Paramount Theatre starting Tuesday. Evening spoke with the show’s leading lady Hannah Shankman about the show.
"'Funny Girl' is an incredible story. It's based on a real person named Fanny Brice. She was a Jewish comedian in the early part of the 20th century. She basically paved the way for all the incredible comedians you know today, like Jerry Seinfeld, Joan Rivers, Sarah Silverman," said Shankman. "'Funny Girl' is sort of about her rise to stardom and it's also about her love story with Nick Arnstein, and also, honestly, her love story with herself."
"It's really a whole new 'Funny Girl.' Even if you've seen the show before, you're going to see things you've never seen before, and of course, the classic that we all know and love," said Shankman. "'Don't Rain on My Parade' is a very well-known song throughout the country. 'People' is also another hit from the show. 'I'm the Greatest Star,' is another great one."
"I think 'Funny Girl' is one of those shows people walk in knowing the music and thinking it's going to be funny. It's really just an incredible love story about not only with her relationship with Nick Arnstein, but with herself. It's really a story about loving yourself, feeling confident in your own skin, knowing that you are worth everything, and it's not dependent on the love from other people."
"Funny Girl" is playing at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle from Sept. 24-29.
