SEATTLE — The first-of-its-kind museum in the Pacific Northwest showcases Hispanic achievements in Washington state. It is focused on the lives of Mexican Americans, Chicano/as, and Latino/as from the earliest times to the present.
“This museum is unlike any other local museum,” said History Curator from Sea Mar Museum Erasmo Gamboa. “We wanted to tell our story in our own words. It's a search for self-identity.”
This museum chronicles and collects the social and economic history of Washington’s Spanish-speaking community through the voice of the people themselves, as well as documents and photos.
Their story is told by researching and addressing topics such as work, play, religion, politics, migration, civil rights, family, and community.
This exhibit showcases the pride and understanding of the Latino community's contributions to the State of Washington. Without forgetting the significant accomplishments of women in the community.
Established as the sole Latino Museum in the region, this gallery stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of the Latino community.
It houses a captivating collection of historical artifacts, documents, and artwork that paint a vivid picture of the lives of migrant farmworkers and the transformative Civil Rights Movement from the 1950s to the 1970s.
There are more projects coming to the museum in the near future; the Sea Mar Museum is actually going to double in size, and they'll then begin to focus on Central Americans, South Americans, etc., to tell the fuller story.
