Chris Pratt and Tom Holland reveal how their brothers keep them grounded

They star in the new animated film 'Onward.' Travel and accommodations provided by Disney Studios.

SEATTLE — Onward is set in a world of mythical creatures who've all lost their enchantment, until two elf brothers re-discover it.

The film begins on the younger brother's birthday, when he receives an unexpected gift from his deceased father - a spell that can bring him back, for one day. But something goes wrong and the spell only conjures the lower half of his body. So the brothers embark on a quest to resurrect the rest of him.

Reporter Kim Holcomb talked to stars Chris Pratt, Tom Holland and the filmmakers about siblings, improvising, and the surprising demands of voice work.

HOLLAND: "How many times did you lose your voice doing this film?”

PRATT: “Every time. Literally.”

HOLLAND: “I would work on this film on the weekends, when I was working on other stuff. And the directors I'd be working with during the week were like, 'You had Pixar again this weekend? It's Monday and we can't give you any dialogue.'”

PRODUCER KORI RAE: "We've been writing these characters for years, and then we record Tom and Chris and they kind of add their own personality to it."

DIRECTOR DAN SCANLON: “It was super fun with Chris because we kind of decided the first take would be the one where he just goes nuts. He decided, 'I'd rather actually do a crazy take first' because then he can really react, and then we'd say, 'Okay, now do one as written, but his first stuff was always really fun."

HOLCOMB: "I want to know what the conversations are when you are deciding, 'How can we make this sentient pair of pants touching and funny,' because you did!"

SCANLON: "The animators do such a phenomenal job of finding heart in anything."

HOLCOMB: "You both are very famous, millions of fans. But what is the one way that your brothers can always put you in your place?"

PRATT: "I think it's important for us, anybody who finds themselves in a situation where you're surrounded by people who really want to please you that you cling tightly to the relationships you've had before anybody saw you the way the world sees you now. And so it's very easy for my brother to put me in my place just by a look, a single word, like 'All right, Hollywood.' I'm like, 'Dangit!’”

HOLLAND: “I'll tell you what puts me in my place - is if I'm ever here in L.A. and I'm having dinner with a bunch of people and I'll tell a joke and everyone will laugh, and then I'll go home and tell the same joke and my family are like, 'It's not that funny.'”

PRATT (laughing): “That jokes sucks.”

HOLLAND: “It's really not that funny.”

Onward is now on available on Digital. It will be available for streaming on Disney+ on April 3.
