TUKWILA, Wash. — Need an excuse to grab a treat? Neighborhood Cafe in Tukwila has an entire flight of them.
The new eatery features shareable mini sizes of the menu’s signature iced coffee drinks. The flight includes pandan, black sesame and ube lattes and a mint mojito cold brew.
"The coffee flight is very unique,” said owner Max Heigh. "It's an experience, so you definitely get a little bit of everything."
The restaurant specializes in traditional Filipino food fused with classic café dishes, reflecting the kind of meals Heigh grew up eating with his family.
"Simple dishes like lumpia, it's a great crispy dish that we eat a lot at our gatherings,” he said. "We're not serving it in a traditional way, we're serving it in a way that we think is fun, it's tasty, it's different."
There are purple and pink Ube biscuits and gravy (the colors are all natural, drawn from purple sweet potato and pink loganisa sausage.) There's also Instagram-worthy mini pancakes drenched in Ube syrup and mouthwatering chicken and churros.
Heigh said the eatery’s name could have involved the word “Filipino,” but he wanted something that felt more universal.
"We wanted it to just be a place where everyone can come in and it's normalizing that you're seeing longanisa and ube and lechon and stuff like that,” Heigh said. "It could be anyone's neighborhood, definitely."
Neighborhood Café is open daily from 6 a.m. – 5 p.m. and is located at 17165 Southcenter Pkwy. Diners can eat-in or order food to-go.
