SEATTLE — It may be Hollywood's most unlikely fraternal pairing since Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito starred in "Twins."
Twins Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin team up for one final heist in "Brothers," streaming on Prime Video starting Thursday. It's a madcap comedy with, apparently, some lingering effects on the cast four years after it was shot.
First Brolin appeared to be taking a nap at the start of our Zoom interview so Dinklage thought it best if we whispered throughout our interview.
Like so many brothers, the two get into some physical altercations. We wondered if they had any rules before the fists started flying.
"Like safety rules? Like a safe word?" asked Dinklage. "Goonies!"
"'Game of Thrones!'" added Brolin, now wide awake. "GOT!"
"We just went off on each other," Dinklage said. "I think we connected a few times but its fine. We didn't have a fight coordinator on the set."
Brendan Fraser, Marisa Tomei and Glenn Close are some of the big name stars that signed on. Filming took place in Atlanta during the pandemic. Dinklage, who is one of the executive producers of the film, kept getting updates on cast.
"It was just like wait really what?," he recalled. " Really shocking and surprising. You guys read the script, right? that's what I kept wanting to tell them."
"We were in the midst of COVID," added Brolin. "We were already feeling zany. We were already feeling like that off camera so I just think it was a natural manifestation and luck that somebody actually wanted to finance this film, and let us kind of go off the rails so to speak."
"Because the whole world was off the rails," Dinklage said.
"The whole world was off the rails," agreed Brolin.
Nothing is more off the rails than a scene Brolin does with an orangutan.
"We came up with the scene," Brolin said. "We did the scene. It's not our fault."
"It's like the centerpiece of the movie," teased Dinklage. "Reminds me of Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro in the movie 'Heat.' I will say this. This one is hotter than Heat. This one just hot.
"This is blue heat," Brolin said.
"Monkey heat," Dinklage said.
If you're in the right mood, "Brothers" can be a real hoot, but there's a good chance the actors had more fun making the movie than you will have watching it.
