My rave is the can't miss gift this holiday season -- Chandler O'Leary's "On Island Time." It is an illustrated guide to adventures around the islands of Washington and British Columbia. The artist unexpectedly died earlier this year but she'd left behind several of these beautifully illustrated books. Another one is "The Best Coast" which is a road trip atlas up and down the Pacific coast. Nobody else has shown quite this kind of love for the place we call home.

My rave is for an obscure website that bills itself as a "virtual time machine" and if you're a history buff like I am you can lose hours on it. It's called Whatwasthere.com and it features thousands of historic photos you can fade in and out of over their current day Google Street Views. It's so cool, you use an interactive map to find the locations you want to see. The phone version doesn't work as well as larger screens and it might be a zombie website. It doesn't look like it's been updated in about five years but it really doesn't matter because there is so much there already - more than 12,000 photos from our state alone.
