SEATTLE — Authentic West African cuisine has come to Seattle's First Hill neighborhood. Gold Coast Ghal Kitchen's menu is influenced by the flavors of chef and owner Tina Fahnbulleh's home country, Liberia, and neighboring Ghana, where her family fled from civil unrest in the early '90s.

When Fahnbulleh moved to Seattle in 2016 she couldn't find her favorite West African dishes, so she cooked them herself.

"That's how I got started with the dinner parties and such and then meal prepping and catering," Fahnbulleh said. "It's Liberian Ghanaian food with some other West African favorites.

"I've been cooking since I can remember, helping my grandmother, my dad," Fahnbulleh said. "We lived in a refugee camp, and so it was who's coming for dinner? We don't know. We're just cooking a lot of food. Anyone who comes in, cool, you can have some. I'm inspired by that."

The cuisine is colorful, fresh, zesty and spiced to order.

"The base level is between mild and medium," Fahnbulleh said. "But I have hot sauces. If you want it spicy just ask for it."

Gold Coast Ghal Kitchen is located at 1009 Boren Ave in Seattle. Its current soft opening will transition to regular Wednesday-Sunday hours in mid-November.
