SEATTLE — Not far from the historic Comet Lodge Cemetery in Seattle’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, you’ll find a home haunt named in its honor.
Comet Lodge Haunt was created by Erika Hansen, who grew up in a rural area.
"Corn mazes and haunted houses were a big part of my childhood, but a lot of those places are also inaccessible for people that live in the city,” Hansen said. "My hope is to foster the same memories that I'm so fond of from my childhood."
She and husband Marc Galt host an spooky elaborate experience for neighbors in their front and back yards.
"There's ghosts, there's skeletons, there's zombies, there's witches, there's werewolves, there's scarecrows,” Galt said. “There aren't scary clowns, there's not gore. It's scary but it's suitable for everyone."
Visitors wind their way from the front yard to the back, where there’s a pathway through a field of corn Hansen grew herself. The idea came from an off-handed comment Galt made during the summer.
“He goes, 'You know what would be cool? Someday you could grow a corn maze.' And someday translated into me getting into my car and going to the garden store,” Hansen said, laughing.
The experience is free, but visitors can donate to ALS research if they choose. Hansen is raising money on behalf of a childhood friend who’s fighting the disease.
"There's a lot going on in the world,” she said. "Being whimsical, it's a huge part of self-care for me. It's not necessarily about the creepy factor, it's about doing something out of the ordinary.”
Galt added, “And it brings the community together."
The Comet Lodge Haunt is located at 5923 21st Ave S in Seattle. It runs Halloween night from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m. and candy is included in the experience.
