TACOMA, Wash. — This historically significant building in Tacoma was converted into a unique hotel.
"The Elks Lodge was originally build in 1916," said Michael Do from McMenamins Elks Temple. "This spot is pretty rad because we have 45 hotel guest rooms."
McMenamins Elks Temple Hotel is a vibrant, one-of-a-kind gathering place for guests and locals alike.
"McMenamins is so unique, there's art, music and cool stuff everywhere," said Steve Rydgren, a McMenamins Elks Temple regular.
Among the many hidden things throughout the building is a door that literally opens to nowhere.
"Hidden rooms at the different McMenamins hotels, you push on the wall and you find things," Rydgren said.
There's even a hallway that feels like you're walking down a dark alley, but you're still inside the property and it leads to The Graffiti Room. This room is full of brightly colored graffiti and murals.
"McMenamins is so varied in their art form," said Do. "Throughout this building you'll see a lot of art pieces that pay homage to the local history."
One of their paintings in this location features Marvin Ness, one of Tacoma's drag super stars during the '70s.
"All 45 guestrooms have their own unique headboard art that's been drawn by different artists," Do said.
There's so much to at Mcmenamins, even ghosts want to come and enjoy the hotel.
"I've got this ghost log that we keep here at the hotel front desk," Do said.
If you'd rather enjoy your stay or recover after a recent ghost sighting, the Spanish Bar or The Old Hangout Tiki Bar is always a good escape.
Their cocktails might be delicious, but McMenamins has their very own on-site brewery where they make in-house mixes.
"I'm biased but I think it's one of the most fun locations I've been to," Do said.
Fun it is, which is exactly why Mcmenamins is this year's winner of Best Boutique Hotel.
