Short hike to a cool spot: Rocky Brook Falls

This waterfall on the Hood Canal is a big payoff for a short stroll. #k5evening

BRINNON, Wash. — If you’re ever traveling along the Hood Canal in Brinnon, take a three mile drive up Dosewallips Road and park at the wide spot in the road after the small Rocky Brook Bridge for a tiny hike with a big payoff.

This less than a quarter-mile stroll along a wide gravel path doesn't start out pretty – you walk past a gate and a concrete hydroelectric structure. A sign on the slope behind the building says "private property" and "no trespassing" so stay out of the surrounding forest. Hundreds of locals and tourists visit this place any given weekend, just be sure to stick to the wide gravel path.

The creek running alongside the trail improves the view quickly. After less than a quarter mile, the creek’s best work is revealed — Rocky Brook Falls.

It's a 200 foot "horsetail" waterfall that plunges into a shallow pool. The falls are actually much longer, it extends 350 feet up the narrow canyon.

It's a perfect adventure for anyone seeking relief a hot summer day, the cascading water acts as a gigantic fan – moving the leaves on the surrounding trees and providing mother nature’s version of an air conditioner.

Some say if you watch long enough from a certain angle, you'll see an angel in the falls.

Whether you see one or not — this short hike to a cool spot on the Hood Canal is a little bit of Heaven here on earth.
