Actor Jesse L. Martin talks about 'The Irrational' and his role in the original Broadway cast of 'RENT'

The show has already been renewed for season 2. #k5evening

SEATTLE — The NBC show "The Irrational" debuted late last year and it's already been renewed for season 2. One of the big reasons? Viewers love lead actor Jesse L. Martin. So we had our fan-favorite - Jim Dever - interview him about the show's success. Below is a transcript of the interview.

DEVER: "The show is based on the premise that people are irrational but predictably so. Do you believe that?”

MARTIN: "I do believe that now I wouldn't have believed that before taking on this role. I mean, I certainly believe I would have believed the statement people are irrational, but I never thought you could predict it. But since joining this show and learning what I've had been learning, and talking to our resident expert on these things, you start to notice patterns of behavior. And that's where the predictability comes from, where you start to see the same behaviors happen in making irrational decisions. It's why the show is so fascinating to me."

DEVER: "And it's so fun to watch and  just your character because Alec has such a sixth sense about people has any of that worn off on you do you find in your real life you walk around and you're reading people now or you're trying to?

MARTIN: "I can barely help it now. Because first of all, I spent so much time on set, you know, playing the character, that the time I do have off, it's kind of hard to turn that mechanism in my brain off. So I have to make myself stop because you don't want to start reading the behavior of your family and your friends all the time that we get really, really annoying and probably rude at some point."

DEVER: "I know that you are probably approached about 50 times a day with people either singing a song from 'RENT' or asking you to sing a song from 'RENT' does that still go on 20 years later."

MARTIN:  "Yes, absolutely, yeah. I mean, 'RENT' is still very, very present in the zeitgeist of media. So it's being introduced to new fans, as we speak. You know, all I have to do is walk down the street for a little while and there will be a "RENT" fan. And you're right. They love coming up to sing or asking me to sing or just telling me great stories about why they were moved by the show. So I always call it the gift that keeps on giving."

DEVER: "I will neither ask you to sing a song from that or subject you to my singing from 'RENT' either I just want to say thank you and we'll be watching 'The Irrational' Alright, Thanks, Jesse."

MARTIN: "Thank you so much, man. I appreciate it."
