SEATTLE - In Sicario, Josh Brolin plays the ruthless leader of a task force determined to take down a drug cartel.

But in real life, he's more likely to have an easy-going conversation about body art.

"I had all my tattoos removed," he said. "They were like jail house tattoos. They weren't actually jail house tattoos, but they looked like them… and now you look at tattoos and they're really, really beautiful. It's a different era. So I may now, later in life, just get covered."

Audiences met Brolin for the first time in the Pacific Northwest cult classic The Goonies. He's been fielding questions about a sequel ever since.

"I just met a writer who's doing very, very, very well," Brolin said. "And he said he'd written a version of The Goonies 2… and they almost did it, but they weren't quite able - so it's always in the air."

In the meantime, Brolin continues to make traditional roles feel unconventional. In Sicario, he plays a deadly operative who seems bemused by his brutal job.

"I was like, okay, did we do something good? Did we do something not so good? And then I saw the film and I was like, ‘wow,'" he said.

Critics agree, calling Sicario "superb" and "powerful."

It opens in Seattle on September 25. Click for showtimes
