MERCER ISLAND, Wash. — A serpent of the sky is bringing new heat to the coolest logo on ice.
"The Kraken already have such a gorgeous, dynamic logo to start with," said Mercer Island artist Juliana Kang Robinson. "I wanted my powerful creature, the dragon, to emulate that."
Robinson created the new Year of the Dragon Kraken logo using some of the same vibrant colors you'll find in her other pieces.
"It's a traditional Korean color scheme called obangsaek," she said.
The Korean-born artist strives to create designs that are inclusive and inviting.
"One of the things that really guides my work is I'm really into art for all. And so I like to create work that, no matter who you are, no matter what age, where you come from, there's something in it for you," Kang Robinson said.
You can find her work in galleries, transit stations, and even the crosswalk in front of Seattle Art Museum, where she's worked as a teaching artist.
"It was really for pedestrians, to enliven and bring just this moment of joy to pedestrians and cyclists," Kang Robinson said.
That knack for bright, bold design lights up the limited-edition Kraken logo, with the dragon serving as temporary placeholder for the usual Kraken sea monster.
"It's not a destructive dragon," Kang Robinson said. "The water dragon that I was inspired by - from Chosŏn Dynasty, 13th to 19th Century Korean art - supports farmers, makes the villagers celebrate because they're going to have a bountiful harvest."
"I just wanted it to be super fun and celebratory," she said, "and capture that feeling of Lunar New Year."
