SEATTLE — On Saturday, September 28, some of Seattle’s most well-known nonprofits and artists will come together for “An Evening with the Residency” to celebrate five years of the innovative collaboration between the Museum of Pop Culture, Arts Corps and Grammy Award-winning artists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Macklemore will headline the show at the Paramount Theatre, with special guests joining him and Residency alumni on stage.
Tickets for the historic event go on sale Friday, July 26, at 10 a.m.
KING 5 and Evening are proud to support the event, which will feature Residency student performances, guest speakers and food from award-winning chef and restaurateur Tom Douglas. All funds raised will support the ongoing growth and expansion of The Residency.
The Residency provides access and opportunity to aspiring young hip hop artists, helping them acquire tangible artistic and professional skills while also gaining confidence, teamwork and a deepened understanding of their own identity and power. The year-long program launched in July 2015 and includes a month-long intensive workshop where up to 45 young people participate in either a vocal or production track. During the intensive workshop, the budding artists write original songs, record in a professional studio and perform in front of hundreds of people at a premiere Seattle venue. In addition to making, recording and performing their music, the artists participate in numerous engaging panel discussions with leaders in the Northwest creative community.
The Residency exists to break down barriers to equitable arts learning. In an effort to address financial difficulties and to honor their work as artists, youth participants receive stipends at the completion of the residency. After the summer intensive workshop the young artists have access to regular skills-building workshops and receive opportunities to perform and take part in other educational and industry experiences.
