Meet the Bainbridge Island woman who picked the 2019 Color of the Year

Living Coral is showing up everywhere - find out why it's causing a colorful controversy

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. — It was all over the gowns at this year's Golden Globes.

It's showing up on nails, cheeks and lips.

Meet the color you're going to be seeing a lot of this year:

“It is, drumroll...Living Coral!" said Lee Eisman, the color expert who helped select this particular shade as the color of 2019.

Eisman lives on Bainbridge Island and she's the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. She travels the world looking at art, film and fashion to pick the tone that's on-trend.

Last year's color was Ultra Violet. For 2019, we go to the opposite side of the spectrum - to Living Coral:

"It's simply a beautiful color. It's a color that people in all the studies that we have done react very favorably to. It has an inner warmth yet there's something about the color that has a little bit of whimsy attached to it, so it has a bit of a sense of humor." Eisman said.

Not everyone has a sense of humor about this color: Slate hated it, calling it an 'Awkward Wokeness Attempt' because of the environmentally aware name.

And the orange-ish shade isn't everyone's cup of tea.

"Well I would say to people who might stand back a little bit and say well 'I'm not so sure about the color,' give it a chance," Eisman urged.

Living Coral is already popular in the cosmetics world:

"They love the idea of coral because they know how versatile it is and how good it can look in on the skin, how warming it is,” said Eisman, who has these tips for working the trendy tone into real life:

Living Coral plays well with neutrals like navy and gray.

It adds warmth and friendliness when used in the home.

And best of all, the 2019 color of the year will give you that tropical getaway feeling on a nail polish budget.

"When we do our color association studies invariably if you show people something in the coral family they were almost invariably say sunset. It means beautiful vacation in Hawaii, being on a wonderful beach somewhere with that sunset overhead. It conjures up those kinds of feelings and that's a lovely thought around Living Coral."
