SEATTLE — The name of the band is Waves Crashing.

Why not Crashing Waves?

"If you ever watch a movie with subtitles," said vocalist Joshua Calisti. “If you ever notice, anytime they're near the ocean, it says 'waves crashing.'”

Tell us a little bit about your music.

“It's alternative indie rock. I mean, there's a little bit of nostalgia with it, but it's fresh," Calisti said.

Why would you say nostalgia?

“Well, a lot of the influences people from bands from the '80s and '90s," Calisti said.

"Rock music with a lot of guitar feedback,” drummer Bryce Albright added.

“You're using the best elements of alternative rock—loud drums and big guitars—but with more subdued vocals,” said Calisti. "We write what we write, and we play what we play.”

Now that we know what this band's sound is all about, let's meet the members. Joshua Calisti is the lead vocals and guitar, Bryce Albright on the drums, and Joshua Charette on bass guitar.

Not many bands nowadays have a trio, you guys didn't want to hire somebody else. Or does it just work perfectly how it is right now?

“Yeah. Keeping it simple, you know, if you add one more person to it, it gets a little more complicated," Calisti said. "And then, you know, you have a certain chemistry that you want to keep intact.”

How do you guys know each other?

“Craigslist, I answered an ad that Joshua had on Craigslist,” Albright said.

Where do you guys get inspiration?

“The songwriting process usually starts with Calisti. He's a mastermind of this band,” Charette said.

What do you want people to know about your band?

“Music has always been the way that I can connect to the world,” Albright said.

Will you guys say that you guys have a Northwest sound?

“A lot of it is influenced by the Pacific Northwest, but I also think that it's a lot of different influences over a lot of different years from a lot of different genres of music being pulled in to try and make something,” Albright said.

“It fits the vibe of the region,” Calisti added.

Are you working on new material?

“Yeah, we have a newer song that's not released yet,” Calisti said. “[It's about] coming out of a rut and the funk. We all have funks in the wintertime here, rain on rain on the rain.”

Are you trying to say you've been depressed here in the northwest with the rain?

"No, not at all," Calisti laughed.

Don’t miss a performance of Waves Crashing coming up on Season 10 of Band in Seattle.
