LAKE STEVENS, Wash. - His owners think he's part Mexican Hairless, part Chinese Crested.
Whatever his breed, Diego is the "Best Ugly Dog" in Western Washington.
The Lake Stevens canine was voted top of his unattractive class by voters in the 2015 Best of Western Washington viewer's poll.
"I couldn't be more proud," laughed owner Tom Spane.
His wife Alysia adopted Diego when he was just a newborn.
"He honestly looked like one of those fat little toads that you see at the zoo," she said. "Like a big grey blob of skin."
He now sports a mohawk atop his otherwise hairless, speckled body. His tongue never fully retracts. And he's losing sight in his left eye.
But his family loves him for who he is, on the inside.
"He's nice, like a warm water bottle," said Spane's daughter Kaitlyn Haygood, holding Diego like a baby. "He's just a really good companion to have."
In fact, Diego is far from lonely. He's had a girlfriend for nearly a decade – the Spane's other dog, Paris the Chihuahua.
"It was love at first puppy sight," Alysia laughed.
They even started a family together. The dogs had a litter of two, who may one day challenge their dad for his "Best Ugly Dog" title.
