SEATTLE — It makes us sing, dance and think. But pop culture is rarely given its due as a defining element of what makes us who we are.
"We're tackling the story of pop culture, which is huge as you can probably guess," said Amalia Kozloff, Senior Curator for the Museum of Pop Culture. "Pop culture is global. It connects us all, and it's ever-changing. Video games, food, fashion, it's all of those things that we take in on a regular basis."
MoPOP's exhibit, "Massive: The Power of Pop Culture," sets out to showcase the society-changing impact of entertainment.
"But not defining it for our visitors," Kozloff said. "Really asking a lot of questions."
From Dorothy's Wizard of Oz outfit to Darth Vader's cloak and helmet, the dozens of artifacts on display take guests on a mindblowing tour of some of our favorite culture-shaping moments, going back to the 1920s.
"That's really when pop culture came into the mainstream," Kozloff said.
The long-term exhibition is made up of treasured items from the Paul Allen collection, interactive displays and other artifacts, from Lizzo to Beyonce to Prince.
"There's so many really great pieces here," said Kozloff. "People are going to react emotionally to different things."
It's a flagship exhibition for a museum all about who we are and what makes us feel.
"That's what we do," said Kozloff. "We tell stories."
